Atlanta, GA–Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) will be hosting their 151st Annual Founders’ Day Celebration and C.D. Hubert Lecture Series. Festivities are scheduled for Monday, February 11, 2019 through Friday, February 15, 2019.
“During Morehouse School of Religion Founder’s Day observance, we will gaze into our world through the lens of the psalmist (Ps.12:5, 41:1-2),” stated Dean of Morehouse School of Religion, Joseph Evans. “We hope to highlight the ancient and contemporary intersection that protects income and wealth inequalities. Our need is to demand justice to end human poverty.”
The celebrations begin on February 11 at the Robert W. Woodruff Library: Atlanta University Center (AUC) with the Founders Day Banquet. The banquet’s keynote speaker will be Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Haggray, Executive Director of the American Baptist Home Mission Societies and Judson Press. Rev. Dr. Haggray became known as a racial trailblazer after serving as the first black executive director of the District of Columbia Baptist Convention, a full-time job he held for a decade. He possesses a master’s degree from Yale Divinity School and a doctorate of ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary.
Rev. Dr. Neichelle R. Guidry, Dean of Sister Chapel at Spelman College will be the Founders’ Day morning worship speaker on February 12 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel on the Interdenominational Theological Center’s campus. Rev. About Morehouse School of Religion (MSR)
Morehouse School of Religion, formerly known as Augusta Theological Institute, was organized in 1867; two years after the Civil War had ended. Known as the oldest theological institution, it was established in the Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia. Springfield Baptist Church is the oldest independent African American church in the United States.
Augusta Theological Institute was founded by Rev. William Jefferson White, an Augusta Baptist minister, cabinetmaker and journalist, with the encouragement of Rev. Richard C. Coulter, a former slave from Augusta, Georgia, and Rev. Edmund Turney, organizer of the National Theological Institute for educating freedmen in Washington, D.C. The American Baptist Home Mission Society of New York was a major sponsor. Between the years of 1867 to 1871 White appointed five ministers to serve as Augusta Institute principals: James W. Parker, J. Mason Rice, Charles Henry Corey, Lucian Hayden and W.D. Siegfried. White appointed Rev. Dr. Joseph T. Robert, a trained minister and physician. Robert was the father of the author of Robert’s Rules of Order, the Institute’s first president.
